David Icke says famous Terry Wogan son of God interview was "a gift"

One of the most famous moments in Sir Terry Wogan 's career was his interview with David Icke.

The legendary broadcaster famously faced off against then TV host, now conspiracy theory spokesman David Icke when he appeared on his chat show with the sensational claim that he was the son of God.

Interrupting Icke, he said: "They're laughing at you, not with you. I didn't mean that to be hurtful.

"I don't want you to misinterpret it, they're not laughing in sympathy with you."

But then in the most recent interview, the pair squared off again with Wogan calling Icke 'bitter' and inviting him to elaborate on his beliefs.

David said: “It was a historic interview with Terry, to say the least.

"Terry acknowledged later that he might have handled it differently if he had done it again.

"Despite what happened as a result of it, I bear no bad memories of what happened. In many ways that interview was a gift to me.

"The prison most people live in is what other people think.

"I look back on it not so much as fondness, but gratitude.

"It was the making of me in many ways because it freed me to say what I think and write what I think, which from most people’s views are far out things.

"He had a certain style and he expressed that style that evening. It wasn’t so much how it was conducted, it was the response to it.

"I am sad for his family, they have lost a husband and a father. I bear absolutely no grudges and have no regrets.

"Years later I went on a show where Terry looked back at old interviews for Gold. It was a dramatically different interview.”
